Broken garage door springs? Here’s why.
Broken garage door springs are a common problem, that’s for sure. But
often, homeowners cannot pinpoint where exactly they went wrong. With
broken torsion springs, your garage door won’t function as it is supposed
to and this can be really inconvenient.
Repairing broke garage door springs calls for professional expertise. It
would, however, be great to know what went wrong. This will help you avoid
the same in future.
Broken garage door springs can be as a result of a number of things. Here
are the most common ones.

Wear and tear
This is by far the most common reason for broken torsion springs. The
garage door is one of the most used devices in your home. Constant use is
bound to take a toll on the various parts that enable it to move. The
torsion springs come with a specified lifespan but that all depends on how
many times you and your family use the garage door. The weight of your
garage door also puts a certain pressure on the springs and with time, they
could give way to it.

Poor maintenance
Proper maintenance could have your garage door last for a couple more years
than the specified time. However, most homeowners tend to ignore the
maintenance of the garage door. Maintaining your garage door by, for
example, constantly lubricating the torsion springs will lengthen their
lifespan. Other than that, you need to ensure that your door is always
balanced. To do so, manually open the garage door and release it halfway.
If your springs are in good condition, the door will stay still. If the
door sags a bit, then it may be time to get some new springs.

Rust
Rust on the springs will certainly lead to their failure. Rust causes
friction on the coils and eventually corrodes the coil and weakens the
springs. However, there is some good news. Rust is very easily preventable.
All you have to do is spray some lubricant on the springs every three to
four months. This not only lubricates the coil but also prevents rust from
building up.

Improper installation
Garage doors are manufactured in such a way that each door has a specific
spring engineered to operate the door. If the springs installed are not a
match, then this means that they are more likely to break down and cause
failure. Ensure that when installing, the correct spring length and wire
size are used.

Ill-advised cost saving
Garage doors usually use two torsion springs, one on each side. However, in
order to cut costs, some builders will use one long torsion spring across
the entire door. While this may work for small and light garage doors, the
spring may not support a heavy garage door properly. A single spring
working to support a heavy garage door will not last long. It will
eventually lead to failure and may end up causing some heavy damage. In any case, a garage door repair company can help you fix these sorts of springs.

Although garage door springs are bound to beak at some point, some simple
maintenance routine practics should increase their lifespan. Remember that
in case of broken springs, you will have to call a certified garage door
company, rather than attempt to fix the problem yourself.

Garage Door Safety Tips

Your home garage is basically a moving wall, and if anyone has access to
your garage, they could so easily gain access to your home. It is for this
reason, therefore, that garage door safety is crucial. These tips will help
keep, not only the items in your garage safe but also your entire house.

Always lock the garage doors

I know this sounds like such an obvious thing, but you will be surprised by
the number of people who ‘trust’ their neighbors. This should not be the
case. Whether you are spending some time with your family inside the house,
or you have gone for a run to the grocery store, ensure you lock your
garage doors.

Cover up the garage door windows

If your garage doors have windows on them, ensure they are covered any time
you leave the house. Hiding the contents of your garage is one of the
simplest ways to keep thieves away. You do not even have to use curtains.
Consider having frosted translucent windows. This way, you have your
privacy while at the same time allowing sunlight into your garage.

Replace the old garage door

If you are still using the old garage door that came with the house when
you bought the property, you should replace it with a newer model. Today’s
garage doors are built with materials that last longer and that are much
stronger than those in the past. This makes it difficult to break into
them.

Consider an automated system

Investing in an automated system for your garage door is simply taking your
home’s security to the next level. The available programs feature door
position sensor, control module and smartphone apps that you can use. With
these, you can always tell if your home is safe, even if you are far.

Have regular professional maintenance

Most manufacturers specify that the garage door system and other parts need
to be inspected and replaced at least once a year. You can enroll in a
yearly maintenance plan with a trusted garage door service company.
Additionally, you need to personally inspect your garage door at least once
a month. Ensure everything is in order. In case there is a sign of wear,
contact a trained and certified repairman. Do not attempt to repair the
garage door repair yourself.

Keep children from playing with the garage door
While kids may find it fun to ride up the garage door, they need to
understand that it is not a toy. You should also ensure you keep them away
from the garage door remote controls.

Lock it up

While away from home, add some extra security by having a deadbolt added
onto the garage door. Unplug the garage door opener unit or use a vacation
lock console application. This renders the remotes unusable.

Invest in the rolling-code technology

Spruce up the security of your opener by investing in the rolling code
technology. This technology changes the access codes each time the opener
is used and is a great way to prevent code grabbing.

Kids are very much interested in arts and crafts. It is something which improves their imagination and thinking abilities. Motor skills and problem-solving capacities increase, and the children start to relate what they learn. Children tend to do a messy work in the beginning, but you have to encourage them and teach them how to do it properly. The following are some of the developmental benefits of Arts and Crafts.

Developmental Benefits of Arts and Crafts

Motor Coordination:

When your kids draw shapes, patterns or write something, the motor coordination develops. Children usually use both their hands when they work on arts and crafts. They will have to move their hands in a particular manner and by doing this their bilateral coordination and motor skills develop. This bilateral coordination will help them learn other activities such as showering, dressing, tying their shoelaces etc. These skills may also help them to be better at sports when they become older.

Encourages self-expression:

When a child draws something, they bring out their inner feelings. The get a hope and satisfaction that they can achieve something on their own. When they work on a beautiful craft, they get a positive vibe, and when other appreciates their work, the child will be encouraged to do more.

Socialises in a better way:

When a child is in a class where everyone is drawing or painting, it gives them the opportunity to mingle with everyone and get an idea of what the other children are painting. It also strengthens the parent-child bond. When parents show interest in their child’s work, the child will be encouraged to interact with the parents, and thus it becomes a great way to bond with each other.

Self -esteem:

As the child finishes an artwork, the self-esteem of the child is boosted. Art and crafts give the child a sense of pride, and it also builds their confidence. They will be willing to take up tougher challenges and will be ready to do more things.

Builds Visual learning and memory:

Art does not only teach a child how to draw shapes and colour them; it explains the kids about patterns and measurements. When kids improve their drawing skills, they learn to visualize things and remember them better. When kids start to do activities like jewel making and sculpting they develop their memory skills. They will have to recognise complex patterns and shapes and thereby have an improved memory.

Problem solving skills:

When kids are involved with arts and crafts, they will start to learn how to solve a problem. For example, if a child is learning how to make a paper boat, he/she has to learn the steps and come out with a solution if they get stuck in the middle. When their mind coordinates with their hands, they tend to understand and learn better.

Drawing is something which every child loves doing. It is a great way to develop their creativity and bring out the image they have in their mind. When your kids draw, they improve their imaginations and start to think creatively. As kids, they might struggle with getting specific shapes and strokes thus we need to teach them how to draw.

Tips for Teaching Kids How to Draw

The following are some of the ways you can teach your kids to draw:

Learn to draw:

First of all, if you do not know how to draw then you will not be able to show your child how to draw. Thus make sure that you have recollected your old memories of painting and then plan to teach your kids on how to draw.

Teach your kids various shapes and sizes:

One of the most important things a child needs to understand is the shape and size of everything. Once they know that an elephant is big and an ant is small, they will know how to draw accordingly. For older children, you can teach the attachments of hands and legs with the body and similar details like that.

Getting the strokes right while colouring:

One of the main mistakes which children make is by getting the strokes wrong. Tell them that these strokes need to be of the same pattern and direction. You also need to tell them that they need to try not to colour outside the line of the picture.

To avoid colouring outside the line, you can tell your child to draw a thick outline, and thus they will be remained not to colour outside the picture.

Be extremely polite:

It is very important to understand these kids are very little and that they take time to grasp what you are trying to tell them. You need to make sure that you are never rude to them and always make it a habit of appreciating their work. Only when you appreciate their drawings, they will be encouraged to draw more. You can first tell them how brilliant their picture is and then tell them the points where they can do a lot better in the next picture.

Holding their hands and helping them move:

As a parent, you can hold the hands of your kids and teach them how to move the pencil to make perfect strokes. As you hold their hand, they will be familiar with the stroke pattern and learn to draw better.

Drawing by looking a picture:

You can encourage your kids to draw a picture by looking at something. When they look at an object or a picture, their observation grows, and they will learn to correlate one image with another; once the kids become better, you can ask them to draw without looking at the picture or the object.
